Wireless Leader Employs KOMPSYS for Nationwide ATM Core Network Expansion

Background
Based in Bellevue, Washington, T-Mobile USA (formerly VoiceStream) is one of the fastest growing nationwide wireless carriers, providing voice, messaging and high-speed wireless data services to more than 8 million customers. T-Mobile operates the largest all digital, nationwide wireless networks based on the globally dominant GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology. T-Mobile's network covers over 207 million people with service in 45 of the top 50 U.S. markets. T-Mobile and its affiliates are licensed to provide service to more than 95 percent of the U.S. population.

Challenge
VoiceStream began a project to expand its wireless infrastructure, comprised largely of StrataCom WAN switches. Simultaneously, it was downsizing its technical support staff and reassigning the remaining Cisco StrataCom expertise to other projects. With nearly all of its Cisco StrataCom resources unavailable, VoiceStream found it was lacking the expertise required to continue network rollout and was forced to look to outside resources.

Solution
KOMPSYS utilized its proven PDIO methodology to plan, design, conduct proof of concept testing (POC) and implement a national Frame-Relay / ATM Service-Interworking Backbone network consisting of 143 nodes which includes Cisco BPX, MGX 8850 ATM switches, Cisco 7513 routers, Catalyst 6509 switches and PIX firewalls. The project was completed in 5 months.

Result
KOMPSYS helped VoiceStream expand its network from 9 to 21 cities and managed the deployment of a $12 million equipment investment. KOMPSYS also served as an interface between the provisioning group and Network Operations Center (NOC) to ensure high-speed circuit turn-ups ranging from T3 to OC48, migration of customers onto VoiceStream¹s network and the completion of all necessary documentation. KOMPSYS provided oral and written direction to junior personal on resolving network outages and implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for network device fault isolation. Ultimately, KOMPSYS was responsible for managing a Global Mobile Systems (GSM) cellular backbone utilizing the HP OpenView network management platform.
